DGS Director Sharkey Named a NextGen Public Service Awards Finalists

Each year, the NextGen Public Service Awards recognizes public servants who have gone above and beyond to serve their communities and organizations. Director Sharkey has been named a finalist and joins 29 other dedicated municipal, local, state, and federal public servants from across the country that are promoting innovation and positive growth for government.

This year over 120 public servants were nominated by their peers. A selection committee of current and former government employees selected thirty finalists.

Steve Sharkey is the Director of the Department of General Services. In this role, he manages a staff of over three hundred fifty employees who perform fleet management and building maintenance for the municipal government.

Steve and his team have transformed an under-performing agency into a proactive agency that uses data to drive decision making and that provides excellent customer service. Under his leadership, the department has implemented industry best practices, including an innovative restructuring of vehicle ownership, known as the “master lease,” which has reshaped the City’s fleet, improving its age and reliability.

He believes in working hands-on with every member of his staff and is regularly seen out in the field with mechanics, tradesmen, architects, and engineers. By listening and responding to their needs, Steve strives to create an innovative work environment that fosters and attracts talented professionals.
