DGS Director Steve Sharkey is celebrating Labor Day by engaging with employees; he is working with them on tough jobs during a week of Director Day visits to two DGS divisions: Fleet Management and Facilities Maintenance.

Director Sharkey said after a recent Director Day visit to the People’s Court, “All of the jobs in DGS are important, and sometimes they aren’t the greatest. However, DGS knows how to get the job done.”

On Monday, August 29^th, the Director joined Fleet Management and worked on a dump truck and learned to weld. On Thursday, September 1^st, he joined the Facilities Maintenance team to perform work on a variety of buildings in the City’s Downtown campus, including People’s Court, the Benton Building, and the Police headquarters.

Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. once said that “If a man is called to be a street sweeper, he should sweep streets even as a Michelangelo painted, or Beethoven composed music or Shakespeare wrote poetry. He should sweep streets so well that all the hosts of heaven and earth will pause to say, ‘Here lived a great street sweeper who did his job well. No work is insignificant. All labor that uplifts humanity has dignity and importance and should be undertaken with painstaking excellence.”
